Maternal, Child, Adolescent Health Internship

POSITION SUMMARY:

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), a national organization representing 3,300 local health departments, has one (1) opening for Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Intern.

This position will provide an opportunity to support the role of local public health departments (LHDs) to support MCAH efforts. NACCHO is a primary source of knowledge and research for public health practitioners on the local level, many of whom benefit from NACCHO’s training and technical assistance. The Infant and Toddler Nutrition Intern contribute to the advancement of local public health practice by performing a range of responsibilities related to NACCHO’s Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health program, specifically in the areas of Infant and Toddler Nutrition and Breastfeeding. For local health departments (LHDs) and their staff, NACCHO is the premier source of learning, knowledge and future-oriented research for local public health professionals, and provides resources, education, ideas and advocacy to enhance the voice and visibility of the critical role that LHDs play in keeping our communities healthy and safe.

  • The work schedule will be approved by the Intern’s manager at the beginning of the internship

POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Become familiar with NACCHO’s work in the content area(s) included in the Position Description
  • Review breastfeeding resources, particularly resources that cover policies, systems, and environmental (PSE) changes.
  • Upload resources and maintain the national Continuity of Care in Breastfeeding Support resource repository.
  • Participate in child nutrition-related webinars and review past webinars to develop summary reports.
  • Identify national, state, and local-level organizations and collaborations working in this field. Identify points of contact for organizations implementing best practices in infant and toddler nutrition.
  • Help identify best practices and channels to promote infant and toddler nutrition and breastfeeding implementation materials.
  • Support with the development of breastfeeding and child nutrition social media promotions and campaigns as assigned.
  • Attend and support team and project meetings, including summarizing notes and reporting action items for the NACCHO team.
  • Provide a report or presentation of the internship experience at its closing
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

Masters degree candidates in Public Health, or other related graduate program (e.g., social work, education) with an interest in public health are eligible to apply.

  • Strong reading and synthesizing skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of the internet and its capabilities
  • Ability to organize work projects and complete tasks within assigned time frames
  • Ability to manage time well, especially in a remote environment
  • Ability to consistently meet project deliverables and deadlines
  • Ability to adapt and manage changing goals and priorities in the workplace
  • Strong interest in public health
  • Team-oriented but able to work independently as necessary
  • Medium-level computer skills with Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Word and Excel.

WORK HOURS:

Internship hours are negotiable and flexible. Typically, most hours are served between the hours of 8:30 am and 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday, for 12-15 hours per week, and with no more than 150 hours served total. This internship is fully remote. The intern must use a personal laptop or computer and have sufficient internet access.

SALARY:

The internship is unpaid. The intern can receive academic credit based on the requirements and approval of their academic institution. Should academic credit be received, NACCHO will work with the intern’s advisor or another relevant contact to facilitate the receipt of credit. It is anticipated that this internship will run from January to July 2026.
